When the Civil War broke out in 1861 most of the United States Navy stayed with the Union. Because of that the Confederate Army needed an advantage. To get the edge necessary, the Confederate Army started producing and buying ironclad ships. In response to the new overload of powerful ironclad ships the Confederates were producing, the Union Army also took up the making of ironclad ships. These ironclad ships were very different from earlier ships.
